Privacy Policy

This policy explains what PinPoint collects, why, and who else touches it. It covers the PinPoint mobile app and getpinpointapp.com.

The short version, which the rest of this document does not contradict: your pins are private to your account. There is no feed and no public profile. We do not sell your data and we do not share it with advertisers.

Who we are

What we collect

Things you create

• Pins. The coordinates, the place name and address, whether it is somewhere you have been or somewhere you want to go, and anything you add: photos, files, a note, a star rating, collections and tags.
• Photos and files you attach. Stored privately and served only to you.
• Your profile. Your name and email address, plus your settings, such as units, language and your default pin style.

Things collected automatically

• Location. Only while you are using the app, and only to put the map where you are, place a pin at your position, and find places near you. We do not track your location in the background. You can use the app without granting location access, though placing a pin at your current position will not work.
• Photo location. If you turn a photo into a pin, the app reads the coordinates stored inside that image so the pin lands where the photo was taken. It reads the photos you pick and nothing else.
• Usage analytics. Which screens are opened and which actions are taken, tied to a random identifier rather than to you by name. It is processed in the EU and you can switch it off in Settings.
• Diagnostics. Device model, operating system version and app version, so a bug report can be made sense of.

What we never collect

• Your contacts, your calendar, your messages, or your photo library beyond the images you pick.
• Your location while the app is closed or in the background.
• Payment card details. Apple and Google handle payment and we never see the card.
• Your password, when you sign in with Apple, Google, or a one-time email code.

What we do with it

• Run the app: save your pins, sync them between your devices, and show them back to you.
• Fill in a place's details, such as its address, phone number and opening hours.
• Capture the weather conditions at a visited pin, once, at the moment you place it.
• Keep your subscription status current, so PinPoint+ works on every device you sign in on.
• Send you the emails the service needs to send, such as a sign-in code or a deletion notice.
• Understand which parts of the app are used, so it can be improved.
• Keep the service secure and prevent abuse.

We do not use your pins to build an advertising profile, and we do not sell, rent or trade your personal data. There is no advertising in the app.

Who else processes it

Running the app means using other companies for parts of it. Each one gets only what its job needs, under a contract that restricts them to processing it on our instructions.

Specific things worth spelling out

Sharing a pin

When you share a pin, we create a short link and store that pin's coordinates and name against it. The link itself gives nothing away: the details sit on our server rather than in the URL. Anyone holding the link can open it. Sharing sends only the pin's location, so your photos, note and rating stay private. Shared links expire automatically after 90 days.

Weather

When you place a visited pin, we send that pin's coordinates and the time to a weather service to record what the conditions were. No account, key or identifier goes with it, and the reading is stored once. It does not update as forecasts change.

Place details

Searching for a place, or filling in the address for a pin, sends the search text or the coordinates through our own service to a mapping provider. Requests reach them from our server rather than from your phone, so your device is not exposed to them directly.

Working offline

Pins you create without a connection are held on your device and uploaded when you are next online. Until then they exist only on your phone.

How long we keep it

• Your pins, photos and files: until you delete them, or until you delete your account.
• Your account: until you ask us to delete it.
• Shared links: 90 days, then they expire on their own.
• Analytics: retained in aggregate, and not linked to your name.
• Diagnostics and logs: a short operational window, then discarded.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account from inside the app, under Settings. We will offer to export your pins first, because deletion cannot be undone once it completes.

Deletion is scheduled rather than instant: your account is deactivated straight away and fully erased after 30 days. Signing back in during that window restores everything. After it, your pins, photos, files and profile are gone from our systems, and from our providers' systems on their own deletion schedules.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, object to or restrict how we use it, receive a portable copy, and withdraw consent at any time. Two of these need no request at all: Export hands you a complete portable copy whenever you want one, and Delete account removes everything.

For anything else, write to team@getpinpointapp.com. We will respond within one month. If you are in the EU or the UK and you are not satisfied, you may complain to your local data protection authority.

Where your data goes

We keep data in the EU where we reasonably can. Some providers listed above operate in the United States or at global edge locations. Where data leaves the EU or the UK, it is covered by Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard.

Security

Everything travels over encrypted connections and is encrypted at rest. Your pins are protected by database rules that check ownership on every read and write, so one account cannot reach another's data. Photos and files sit in private storage that is never publicly listable. No system is perfect, and we do not claim otherwise.

Children

PinPoint is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to us and we will remove it.

This website

getpinpointapp.com sets no cookies and runs no advertising or cross-site trackers. We use privacy friendly, cookieless analytics that count visits without identifying visitors.

Changes

If this policy changes we will update the date at the top, and tell you in the app for anything significant.
